Five major trends in the global packaging industry

The first trend, packaging materials are becoming more and more environmentally friendly

Consumers are becoming more and more sensitive to the environmental impact of packaging. Therefore, brands and manufacturers are always looking for ways to improve their packaging materials and leave an impression in the minds of customers. Green packaging is not only to improve the overall brand image, but also a small step towards environmental protection. The emergence of bio-based and renewable raw materials and the adoption of compostable materials have further promoted the demand for green packaging solutions, becoming one of the top packaging trends that have attracted much attention in 2022.

The second trend, luxury packaging will be driven by millennials

The increase in the disposable income of millennials and the continuous development of global urbanization have led to an increasing demand for consumer goods in luxury packaging. Compared with consumers in non-urban areas, millennials in urban areas generally spend more on almost all categories of consumer goods and services. This has led to an increase in demand for high-quality, beautiful, functional and convenient packaging. Luxury packaging is essential for packaging high-quality consumer products such as shampoos, conditioners, lipsticks, moisturizers, creams and soaps. This packaging improves the aesthetic appeal of the product to attract millennial customers. This has prompted companies to focus on developing high-quality and innovative packaging solutions to make products more luxurious.

The third trend, the demand for e-commerce packaging is soaring

The growth of the global e-commerce market is driving global packaging demand, which is one of the major packaging trends throughout 2019. The convenience of online shopping and the rising penetration rate of Internet services, especially in developing countries, India, China, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa, have tempted customers to use online shopping platforms. With the increasing popularity of online sales, the demand for packaging products for safe transportation of products has also greatly increased. This forces online retailers and e-commerce companies to use different types of corrugated boxes and implement new technologies.

The fourth trend, flexible packaging continues to grow rapidly

The flexible packaging market continues to be one of the fastest growing parts of the global packaging industry. Due to its premium quality, cost-effectiveness, convenience, practicality and sustainability, flexible packaging is also one of the packaging trends that more and more brands and manufacturers will adopt in 2021. Consumers increasingly prefer this kind of packaging, which requires the least time and effort to open, carry and store such as zipper re-closing, tearing notches, peeling lids, hanging hole features and microwaveable packaging bags. Flexible packaging provides convenience to consumers while ensuring product safety. At present, the food and beverage market is the largest end user of flexible packaging. It is expected that by 2022, the demand for flexible packaging in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries will also increase substantially.

The fifth trend, smart packaging

Smart packaging will grow by 11% by 2020. A Deloitte survey shows that this will create 39.7 billion U.S. dollars in revenue. Smart packaging is mainly in three aspects, inventory and life cycle management, product integrity and user experience. The first two aspects are attracting more investment. These packaging systems can monitor temperature, extend shelf life, detect contamination, and track the delivery of products from the origin to the end.
